Welcome
aboard SCNAUW Airlines. SCNAUW Airlines
provides services in the communities across the South Central Section of the
United States. You can currently
schedule flights to the Great States of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas with
expansion possibilities in Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma and Tennessee. I am your Captain, Betty W. Wilkerson who
will set our flight plans as we journey from town to town and city to city
throughout this region. I am proud to
have my co- captain, Mrs. Stephanne Spikes who will assist me with the flight
plans to assure that we are steadily on course.
My co-pilots are the intellectual, outstanding and God fearing women that make up my sectional officers (elected and appointed), branch presidents and committee chairpersons. They are ready to take a firm stand to ensure the flight plan is carried out. My cabin crew consists of the mighty women who make up membership in the branches of South Central. The cabin crew are courageous, creative and also God fearing women who have the faith to work entirely to make the world a better place for others.
As your captain, I must inform you of necessary precautions before we prepare to take to the skies for the various destinations on the flight plan. I shared several goals that we will used to steady this airline as we set sight on the 2014 conference. First Precaution – We must all buckle our seatbelts. This precaution will protect us in flight as we hit turbulence along the way. The sky maybe clear, however, we must be prepared for some underlined rumble from time to time. As women of South Central, we know how to overcome the turbulence of adversity and yet move forward with purpose and pride. With that determination we will move past any turbulence and complete our flight plan.
This plan calls for cooperative civic minded women to unite to improve our surroundings. It requires that all members become active at the local, sectional and national levels. As the old saying goes, “if you don’t use it, you will lose it!” Let not lose it. Our founder’s vision would have been in vain if we did. The flight plan also calls for membership growth. South Central has always led the organization with membership. As members of South Central we must recruit women who have the same goals as NAUW to continue the mission. At one point there were more than 700 members in South Central. In September, I called for 700+ members during the 2013-2014 year. As captain, I am pleased to say we met that goal. The South Central Section is now 705 members strong.
According to our National Protocol Guide on page 60, item 19 – Each section should establish a Sectional Archive. I have asked our Historian, Mrs. Meriva Fontenot to gather information about establishing our Sectional Archive at Southern University – Baton Rouge Campus library. Mrs. Fontenot was successful in securing the space and we will begin to deliver our archives in June during the 55th South Central Sectional Conference. SCNAUW Airlines promoted a $200.00 mini grant to be used to develop an NAUW program of work at the branch level. Each branch was asked to submit a grant application to our New Grant Writing Project Committee. This committee created a mini grant application that will be awarded in a competitive format. This will give branches a chance to develop grant writing skills that could be used later for other competitive grants that maybe available. The first of the grants will be awarded at the sectional conference in Baton Rouge.
Should the cabin begin to lose pressure during the flight, an oxygen mask will fall in front of you. Please secure your mask before attempting to assist others. Securing your mask first will give you the confidence to assist others. We have branches that need assistance and nourishing. This flight will help branches to continue to connect with each other to help promote the goals and mission of NAUW. Crew members please prepare the cabin for takeoff. Passengers please sit back, relax and enjoy this flight. You may turn off all electronic devices until we reach our cruising altitude. The flight attendants will move about the cabinet to provide you with a light snack to sustain you during this flight. We will puddle jump from one branch to the other throughout the year. We have been cleared for departure. Once again, Welcome aboard SCNAUW Airlines! We are flying with purpose and pride.
